This Privacy Policy explains what information Wabi-Sabi Japanese (“we”, “us”) collects when you use our website and learning app (the “Service”), how we use it, and the choices you have. By using the Service you agree to this policy.
1. Information we collect
Account & profile information you provide when registering: email address, password (stored only as a salted hash — never in plain text), and the optional profile details on the sign-up form: full name, date of birth, current job role, and your reason for learning Japanese.
Learning data: your progress, XP, streaks, review history, and the Japanese sentences you submit for AI feedback.
Payment information: if you purchase a plan, payment is processed by our payment provider (Stripe). We do not see or store your full card details — only your purchase status and plan.
Technical & usage data: standard server logs and first-party analytics events (e.g. pages viewed, lessons started, chapters passed) — used to keep the Service running, secure, and improving. This stays on our own systems; we don’t use third-party advertising trackers.
2. How we use your information
To provide the Service: create your account, save your progress across devices, and unlock content you’re entitled to.
To grade and give feedback on the Japanese you write, using a third-party AI provider (Anthropic). Submitted sentences are sent to Anthropic solely to generate that feedback.
To process purchases and grant access to paid plans.
To understand how the Service is used so we can improve it, and to detect and prevent abuse.
3. Sharing & third parties
We don’t sell your personal information. We share data only with service providers who help us run the Service, under their own terms:
Anthropic — AI grading and conversation feedback.
Stripe — payment processing (only if you make a purchase).
Our hosting provider — to serve the app and store your account.
4. Data storage & security
Account data is stored in our database; some progress data may also be cached in your browser’s local storage on your device. Passwords are hashed (PBKDF2). We take reasonable measures to protect your data, but no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure.
5. Your choices & rights
You can request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data by contacting us. You can also stop using the Service and ask us to delete your account at any time.
6. Children
The Service is intended for users aged 16 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 16; if you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will delete it.
7. Changes
We may update this policy as the Service evolves. Material changes will be reflected by the “Last updated” date above.
Wabi-Sabi Japanese is an independent learning product and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Japan Foundation or the official JLPT. “JLPT” is a trademark of its respective owner; we say only that our content is aligned to JLPT levels.
